The Man who Came to Dinner

No Christmas at my house is complete without a viewing of this classic. It stars Bette Davis, Ann Sheridan and Monty Woolley. Bette is uncharacteristically subdued, Ann Sheridan is a hoot as the diva of her day and Monty Woolley steals the show as the sarcastic unsentimental SHeridan Whiteside. In a brief, albeit somewhat "stagey" performance, Jimmy Durante entertains as the wild man Banjo. You must see it!

  1. PL, it is fantastic to see you on the site! Your post is Christmas gift for me! And you are so right about TMWCTD. What I like best about it, aside from the long-suffering Grant Mitchell as the harassed husband, is that the more one watches it, the funnier it gets!

  2. I finally saw this for the first time back in October and loved it. It's a very funny film. Ann Sheridan is awesome, Monty is hilarious and Bette is good in a subdued way. Good choice PL.

  3. This film is a riot. Monty Woolley's Sheridan Whiteside is one of the classic Christmas characters ever. I agree about how subdued Bette Davis was--it was nice to see her in a different type of role. Billie Burke was her usual hilarious (and oblivious) self!

  4. I also loved seeing Bette Davis in this film. Monty Woolley gave an unforgettable performance. Of course, Billie Burke is always so fun to watch.
